MANILA, Philippines — A Philippine Air Force capability project seen to boost the country’s surveillance capabilities is awaiting the issuance of the notice of award by the Department of National Defense.

“We are awaiting the issuance of the notice of award for the four air surveillance radar system that we are persistently working on,” outgoing Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Rozzano Briguez said in his retirement speech on Thursday.

He was likely referring to the award for Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Co. worth P5.5 billion. It will be under the Horizon 2 of the AFP Modernization Program and a government-to-government agreement.

A notice of award is a written confirmation of an award of a contract to a successful proponent of a certain project.

New assets on the way
The Air Force is also expecting the delivery of several new assets in the coming months.

“We have a lot more delivery of air assets to expect to start the first quarter of 2020…This includes the remaining radar system, the 6 A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft, one command, and control aircraft and 16 Black Hawk helicopters,” Briguez said.

He said the Air Force will also soon finalize the much-awaited decision for the multi-role fighter acquisition project.
