IA STRENGTHENS PH-UK DEFENSE TIES
Pursuant to the development of long-term cooperation in defense procurement and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program, the turnover of the Implementing Arrangement (IA) between the Department of National Defense (DND) of the Republic of the Philippines and the Ministry of Defense (MOD) of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland concerning the Procurement of Defense Material and Equipment was held on 16 January 2020, at Camp Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Formally signed on 20 December 2019, the IA is anchored on the Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation between the Department of National Defense of the Republic of the Philippines and the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which was signed on 4 December 2017, at the 7th High Level Meeting between the two countries in London.
“Over the recent years, defense firms from the United Kingdom continue to express interest in providing support to the AFP Modernization Program. The aforementioned IA provides the guidelines and procedures on government-to-government procurement that may be performed in the future with UK,” Assistant Secretary Avilla said, as he expressed the relevance of the bilateral engagement to the development of the country’s defense capabilities.
